VADA CURRY RECIPE | SIDE DISH FOR IDLI (or) DOSA
VADA CURRY RECIPE - This dish is a wonderful all rounder that goes well with Idli, Dosa or Poori's. It is prepared by making vadai using chana dal and cooking them in an onion-tomato based gravy.
From our usual chutney's and sambar, do give this recipe a try and definitely you will love it :)

Preparation time : 15 mins + soaking
Cooking time : 30 mins.
For this recipe you need
For the vada you need
- 1 cup of chana dal (soaked in water for 1/2 an hour)
- 4-5 red chillies
- 1/2 tsp. of cumin seeds
- sprig of curry leaves
- A pinch of asafoetida
- Salt
For the gravy you need
- Few bay leaves,cinnamon,cloves
- 1 tsp. of ginger-garlic paste
- Handful of coriander and mint leaves
- 2 medium sized onions, thinly sliced
- 1 big sized tomato - chopped
- 1/2 tsp. of aniseed
- 1/2 tsp .of turmeric powder
- 1 tsp. of chilli powder
- 2 tsp. of coriander powder
- A sprig of curry leaves
- coriander leaves for garnishing
- Salt
- Oil
Preparation
Shape them into balls and steam cook it . Alternatively you can also deep fry these balls.
Heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Add the spices to the pan, fry for a minute.
Add the coriander leaves , mint leaves and green chillies, fry for a minute. Add the onion ,fry until soft.
Add the ginger-garlic paste , tomatoes along with the spice powders and fry for a couple of minutes.
Add water along with salt , when it starts boiling add the cooked vada's into it . Reduce the flame and cook until the raw smell goes off and the gravy thickens .
Serve it hot with Idli's, Dosa's or Poori sprinkled with fresh coriander leaves.
