Shahi Tukra - A sweet with Bread

Shahi Tukra  - A delicious cold dessert

My attempt in making shahi Tukra, I should start like this. I saw a cookery show and was tempted to make this sweet, as my breads were nearing the expiry date.

It was quite different from the appearance they showed in the TV, but the end result was amazing. I was very much surprised to taste my sweet, and u know my daughter loved it.(That's my success) and hence posting this recipe.

For this sweet you need

8 -10 slices of bread
4 cups of milk
2 cups of sugar
Few strands of Saffron
1/2 tsp. of cardamom powder
1/2 tsp. of orange colour powder (optional)
Oil

For Garnishing

Few nos. of chopped almonds
Few nos. of raising(Slighty tossed in ghee)
Few strands of saffron

Preparation

Cut the edges of the bread and make the desired shapes.

In a pan, heat oil and fry the shaped bread slices in batches, till they turn golden brown and drain them in a kitchen towl to remove the excess oil.

In a heavy bottomed pan. Add milk along with  sugar, saffron, cardamom powder and orange colour powder and bring it to boil.

Now pour this boiled milk on top of the bread slices and refrigerate them.(pour the milk gently on top of the bread slices, so that the flavoured milk gets absorbed and don't soak them in milk )

Keep the remaining milk stirring until it gets reduced to 1 cup of mik.( U can see the picture of my milk, it still has to get reduced slightly, but you need lot of patience during this time).

Take the refrigerated bread slices and get ready for garnishing...

This is a cold dessert and hence after garnishing refrigerate them...

Delicious shahi Tukra is ready to serve.

Serve it cold .....

Sending this sweet to the CWS- cardamom seeds event hosted by Priya

OPTIONAL : You can also garnish with pista's and cahews ;-)
